You can use the yarn and hook size of your choice for this crochet snowflake pattern. I recommend sport or DK weight yarn for a neat decorative snowflake.
If you want to use a different yarn, choose yarn that gives you clean stitch definition and enough structure for the snowflake shape. The Yarn Substitution Tool is a helpful resource for finding yarns with a similar weight, fiber content, and texture.
You will need:
- Sport weight yarn in white or any color you like
- 2.5 mm crochet hook, or a hook size suitable for your yarn
- Yarn needle
- Scissors
Gauge and Size Notes
Gauge is not critical for this crochet snowflake pattern. The most important thing is to keep your stitches neat and even so the snowflake keeps its shape.
Made with sport weight yarn and a 2.5 mm crochet hook, the finished snowflake measures approximately 1.96 in / 5 cm. Use thinner yarn for smaller snowflakes or heavier yarn for larger decorations.

Pattern Notes
- The snowflake is crocheted in rounds.
- Start with a magic ring.
- Round 1 creates the center and chain loops.
- Round 2 is worked into the chain loops to create the snowflake points.
- If you use thinner yarn and a smaller hook than recommended, you can make six chain loops instead of five for a fuller snowflake.
- Weave in the ends carefully so the center stays neat.
- You may block the finished snowflake if you want a flatter, sharper shape.

Pattern Instructions
Crochet Snowflake
Make a magic ring with white yarn, as shown in Photo 1.
Round 1: sc, [ch 5, 2 sc (Photo 2)] x 4 times, ch 5, sc (Photo 3). Pull the yarn end to tighten the magic ring. Close the round with a sl st into the top of the first sc, as shown in Photo 4.
Note: If you use a smaller hook and thinner yarn than recommended, repeat [ch 5, 2 sc] 5 times. This will give you six ch-5 loops in total.

Round 2: Work the following into each ch-5 loop: 3 sc (Photo 5), [ch 3, sl st into the back bump on the back side of the first ch of the ch-3 chain (Photos 6 and 7)] x 3 (Photo 8), 3 sc (Photo 9).
Repeat this combination into each ch-5 loop around the snowflake. Cut the yarn, thread the yarn tail onto a needle, and weave in the ends.
