- Scissors, yarn needle, measuring tape.

Please take a moment to pin my image before we begin – it really helps! Thank you so much!
Gauge and Measurements
The final Heart coaster is 5” (12.5 cm) high x 6.5” (16 cm) wide.
Gauge is not important for this pattern; you can easily adjust the size of your heart by using a smaller or larger hook.

Here are the crochet abbreviations used in the Heart Coaster Crochet Pattern. Note that instructions are written in US terms. The resource you may find helpful in following this pattern: Crochet Abbreviations

Tutorials
dc2tog (double crochet two together, decrease)
Step 1. Yarn over (yo), insert the hook into the first stitch, yo, pull up a loop (three loops on hook), yo, pull through the first two loops on the hook (two loops left on hook). You will leave this half-formed dc unfinished (also named as an open double crochet stitch).
Step 2. Repeat Step 1 for the next stitch. You’ll have three loops on your hook, yo.
Step 3. Pull through all three loops on the hook.
3dc-cl / 4dc-cl (free / four double crochet cluster stitch) or bobble stitch
Bobbles are made by working several open double crochet stitches into the same stitch or chain space and then closing them together as one stitch.
Step 1. Yarn over (yo), insert the hook into the indicated stitch or chain space, yo, pull up a loop (three loops on hook), yo, pull through the first two loops on the hook (two loops left on hook). You will leave this half-formed dc unfinished (also named as an open double crochet stitch).
Step 2. Return to step one to begin the next double crochet in the same stitch or space.
Step 3. When you have made the number of open double stitches specified in the pattern, you will have several loops on your hook, one for each of the double crochets, plus the stitch you started with. Close them together by wrapping the yarn around the hook and pulling it through all the loops to complete the bobble.

Round 7:
- In the first st, sc. Place a stitch marker in the top of that sc.
Sc in each st around until there is last st left.
Use the invisible join technique to complete your work, ensuring there’s no noticeable bump typically seen when using a slip stitch to finish a round. To do so,
- Cut the yarn, leaving a tail approximately 5 inches (10 cm) long. Pull the end of yarn through the last stitch completely (photo 1), and thread it onto needle.
- Insert your yarn needle into both loops of the top of the first stitch made in the round, as you would with your crochet hook (photo 2), and pull yarn tail through (photo 3).

- Insert your yarn needle from top to bottom through the back loop of the same stitch from which the yarn end is coming, and then into the horizontal line on the back of that stitch (the small line that is parallel to the back loop, also referred to as the back bar or back bump, photo 4).
- Pull the yarn tail just enough so that the join looks like a regular stitch (photo 5). The tail has now formed two lines connecting the first and last stitches, resembling a stitch.
- Using your yarn needle, continue to weave the tail through stitches on the back of your work. Once the tail is securely fastened, trim off any excess yarn. Ready (photo 6).

Blocking (optional)
Blocking is useful for fixing curling and shaping your work. To block your finished heart, fill a sink or basin with lukewarm water, soak the crochet in water and gently press down to ensure it’s fully wet. Let it sit for at least 10 minutes, then gently squeeze out the excess water. Don’t wring or twist it. Pin it with rust-proof pins onto a blocking board, stretching and smoothing it evenly. Alternatively, you can use a piece of foam board (photo below). You can also block the crochet using PVA glue, which will give it a stiffer shape. Use a Google search for more information.
