The original pattern uses YarnArt Jeans, a Sport/Fine weight yarn made of 55% cotton and 45% acrylic, with 160 m / 175 yds per 50 g. Use pink yarn for the body and arms, green yarn for the shorts area, and white yarn for the eyes. Choose a hook size that gives you tight, neat amigurumi stitches.
If you want to use a different yarn, choose yarns with a similar weight and texture so the body shape stays firm and the stitches look even. The Yarn Substitution Tool is a helpful resource for finding yarns with a similar weight, fiber content, and texture.
You will need:
- YarnArt Jeans in pink – for the body and arms
- YarnArt Jeans in green – for the shorts area
- YarnArt Jeans in white – for the eyes
- Black embroidery floss or thin black yarn for the eye details and mouth
- Optional: small pieces of black felt for the pupils
- Optional: a small piece of purple felt for decorating the shorts
- 2 mm crochet hook if using YarnArt Jeans, or a hook size suitable for your chosen yarn
- Fiberfill stuffing
- Stitch marker or a piece of contrasting yarn
- Yarn needle for sewing
- Scissors
Gauge and Size Notes
Gauge is not critical for this crochet starfish pattern, but your stitches should be tight enough so the stuffing does not show through.
The finished size will depend on your yarn, hook size, and tension. Use the same yarn weight for all main parts so the proportions stay balanced.
