The original chick was made with YarnArt Jeans, a Sport/Fine weight yarn, 55% cotton and 45% acrylic, 160 m / 175 yds per 50 g.
If you want to use a different yarn, choose a yarn that gives you neat, tight stitches and keeps the amigurumi shape well. The Yarn Substitution Tool is a helpful resource for finding yarns with a similar weight, fiber content, and texture.
Yarn used in the original chick:
- YarnArt Jeans 88 light yellow – for the body and wings
- YarnArt Jeans 77 bright orange – for the legs and toes
- YarnArt Jeans 69 green – for the collar
You will also need:
- 2.5 mm crochet hook for the toy
- 3 mm crochet hook for the collar
- 6 mm black safety eyes
- Black, white, and pink embroidery floss for facial details
- Fiberfill stuffing
- Stitch marker or a piece of contrasting yarn
- Long needle for shaping
- Yarn needle for sewing
- Scissors
- Optional: 8 mm beads for the collar ties
Gauge and Size Notes
Gauge is not critical for this crochet chick pattern, but your stitches should be tight enough so the stuffing does not show through. Use a hook size that gives you a neat, dense amigurumi fabric with your chosen yarn.
The finished chick is approximately 5 in / 13 cm tall when made with the recommended yarn and hook sizes. Using different yarn or a different hook size will change the finished size.

Toes

- In the second stitch of the five stitches: sl st.
- In the third stitch: sl st, ch 5. Starting in the 2nd ch from the hook, work 4 sl st.
- In the fourth stitch: sl st.
- In the fifth stitch: sl st, ch 4. Starting in the 2nd ch from the hook, work 3 sl st.

Sew the legs to the front of the belly so the toy sits well.

Collar
Crochet in rows, turning your work at the end of each row. Start with green yarn and use a 3 mm crochet hook.

Create eye shaping with a long needle. Embroider the whites of the eyes with white yarn, the eyelids with the main color, and the eyelash line and eyebrows with black yarn.
Embroider the beak in the center, one stitch below eye level, in a small triangle shape. For the cheeks, make two stitches with pink yarn on each side.
On the top of the head, crochet a small tuft: ch 4, work 3 sl st starting from the 2nd ch from the hook, and fasten off.
