Materials used in the Crochet Cake Free Pattern

For this delicious little project, I used:

  • Schachenmayr Catania Originals, a sport weight (fine #2) yarn made from 100% cotton, with 125 meters (137 yards) per 50-gram skein.
    • For my heart-shaped cakes, I picked soft pink and white shades.
    • For the flowers, choose any colors you like that complement your cake. I chose different shades of pink, but truly – this is where you can let your imagination run wild. Lemon chiffon yellow? Lavender frosting? Mint with strawberries? Yes, yes, and yes.
    • Tip: Use the Yarn Substitution Tool if you want to try other yarns! Just be sure your hook matches your yarn weight.
  • Crochet hook size 2.50 mm.
  • Fiberfill.
  • Scissors, yarn needle.
  • Optional: beads.

Let’s Start the Crochet Mini Cake

Start with pink yarn and place a stitch marker on the first stitch of every round to keep track.

Round 1:

  • Make 15 chain stitches (ch 15).
  • Start in the 2nd chain from the hook: work 7 sc, ch 2, then 6 sc. In the last chain, work 3 sc.
  • Along the other side of the foundation chain, work 5 sc, skip 2 sts, then 5 sc.
  • In the last stitch, work inc.

(Stitch count: 30 stitches, see photo 1).

Round 2:

  • Inc (mark the first stitch), then 6 sc.
  • In the 2-ch space, work your stitches into the loops (see photo 2), not directly into the chain itself. Throughout the pattern, work sc into the first chain loop, ch 2, then sc into the second chain loop.
  • 6 sc, then inc in each of the next 3 sts.
  • 4 sc, skip 2 sts (see photo 3, white arrow), 4 sc.
  • Inc in each of the next 2 sts.

(Stitch count: 36 stitches, see photo 4).

Round 6:

  • All sts Blo: sc in each st around.

(Stitch count: 53 stitches, see photo 6.)

Round 7:

  • Sc in each stitch around, stopping just before the last stitch. At this point, you should have made 52 stitches. We will simulate the last stitch using a yarn needle. To do this,
  • Cut the yarn, leaving a 5″ (15 cm) tail. Pull the yarn completely through and thread it onto the needle. Insert the needle under the first stitch of the round (see photo 7) and pull the yarn all the way through.
  • Then, insert the needle back into the same stitch where the yarn end is coming from, but this time, insert it under the back loop and back bump only (see photo 8).
  • Pull the yarn completely through (see photo 9) and gently tighten the stitch so that the join resembles a regular stitch.
  • Weave in the yarn ends on the wrong side of the work.

The first piece is complete. Crochet the second piece the same way, working from round 1 through round 7.

Ruffle

With white yarn, work ruffles into the remaining front loops:

1. Insert your hook into the stitch just to the left of the dip at the top of the heart (see photo 10).

2. With white yarn, yarn over, pull up a loop, then yarn over again and pull through the loop on the hook to complete a slip stitch.

3. Work sc, dc, and sc all in the same stitch (see photo 11).

4. [Skip one stitch. In the next stitch, work sc, dc, sc] – repeat 4 times.

5. After completing five of these elements, you will have two front loops remaining and the visible transition to the beginning of the round, which was worked in Blo. Skip these two front loops and continue crocheting into the front loop of the first stitch of the round (see photo 12): sc, dc, sc.

6. Repeat [skip one stitch, work sc, dc, sc in the next stitch] all around the heart.

7. Once you’ve finished, the last stitch at the dip at the top of the heart will remain unworked. Cut the yarn, bring the yarn ends to the wrong side, and tie a couple of knots to secure them.

8. The ruffles are complete (see photo 13). Now repeat the same process with the second piece.

Sewing pieces

Join the pieces with a whip stitch or overcast seam, using the same yarn color as the heart.

1. To start, align the pieces with their wrong sides together, making sure the edges and stitches line up perfectly. Use a stitch marker to join the two stitches at the dip at the top of the heart on both pieces (see photo 14). Then place additional markers around the edges to help with alignment (see photo 15). If you don’t have enough stitch markers, pieces of contrasting yarn can be used instead.

2. If you’ve placed markers all around the edge of the heart, you can start sewing from any point. However, if you’ve only joined the stitches at the dip at the top of the heart, begin sewing from that spot.

3. To make it easier to follow, I’ll begin sewing using a contrasting yarn color for demonstration.

4. To start, thread your needle with yarn and insert it through the loop on the lower piece, then through the corresponding loop on the upper piece along the edge. Be sure to go through the loops that are farthest apart – not the ones closest together (see photo 16). Pull the yarn through, leaving about 20″ (50 cm) of working yarn to have enough length for sewing around the entire heart.

5. Insert the needle into the next pair of loops and pull the yarn through firmly to tighten the seam.

Note: You can sew to the right instead of to the left as I did – just choose whichever direction feels more comfortable for you.

6. Continue sewing, removing the stitch markers as you go. Remember to pull the seams tight (see photo 17). Before finishing the seam, stuff the heart with fiberfill – but don’t overstuff it, so it keeps a flat base.

7. To finish, simply cut the yarn, pull the end through the last remaining loops, and weave in the ends. That’s it – your heart is ready (see photos 18 and 19).

Decoration

Time to decorate your cake with tiny flowers, strawberries, or anything your heart desires.

I used tiny crocheted flowers made with the same 2.5 mm hook. Crochet the flowers following this free tutorial , or make the strawberries with this one.

Before sewing pin the flowers (or berries) to the mini cake at the right place then sew. You can add beads as you sew.

Optional: add pearl beads or seed beads for that extra sprinkle of sparkle!
