How to do a Double Magic Ring?
The magic circle, also known as the magic ring or adjustable loop, is a technique used to start a crochet project worked in the round. It allows you to create a larger circle and then tighten it until the hole disappears. There are two variations of this technique: the basic magic ring and the double magic ring. The basic magic ring is perfect for creating a secure start for crochet projects. However, if you need even more strength, especially for crocheted amigurumi, the double magic ring is a better choice.
But what makes the Double Magic Ring different? Well, just as the name suggests, it involves creating a double circle. Instead of wrapping the yarn around your fingers once, you wrap it twice. This results in a circle made of two loops of yarn, providing additional strength and stability.
How to crochet the Double Magic Ring?
To create a double magic circle, start by holding the yarn a few inches from the end. Wrap it twice around your two fingers, as shown in photo 1.
Carefully remove the loops from your fingers, as shown in photo 2.
Grab your hook and place it into the circle as shown on photo 3.
Pull the yarn from the skein and pass it through the circle. Continue pulling the loop on your hook until it is completely through, reaching the top of the magic ring (photo 4).
Yarn over (photo 5).
Pull the yarn through the loop on your hook (Photo 6).
Next, work your stitches around the ring, just like you would with a single magic ring, following the instructions in your pattern. In photo 7, you can see that six single crochets were worked into the ring. Once you have completed your stitches, pull up the loop on your hook to prevent it from unraveling. Remove your hook from the loop. With one hand, hold the stitches securely, and with the other hand, pull the yarn tail (black arrow photo 7).
Pay attention to which of the two loops starts to tighten. Don’t pull this loop all the way in. Instead, take the loop that started to move and pull on it to close the other loop, as indicated by the black arrow in photo 8.
Finally, pull on the yarn tail to close the first loop completely, as shown in photo 9.
This will ensure that your double magic circle is tightly closed and secure.
In conclusion, the magic circle, magic ring, or adjustable loop is a fantastic technique for starting crochet projects worked in the round. The double magic circle takes it a step further by providing additional strength and stability. Whether you choose the basic magic ring or the double magic ring depends on the specific needs of your project. So give it a try and discover the magic of these versatile techniques!
