For my crochet Christmas tree, I used Schachenmayr Catania – a sport weight / fine cotton yarn made of 100% cotton. Each skein is 50 g / 125 m / 137 yds. The colors used for my sample are 00241 green, 00391 petrol blue, and 00105 white.
You can use similar cotton or cotton-blend yarn in green, dark green, white, or any festive colors you like. Make sure your hook size matches your yarn and gives you neat, tight stitches for amigurumi.
If you want to use a different yarn, choose a smooth cotton or cotton-blend yarn that gives you defined stitches. The Yarn Substitution Tool is a helpful resource for finding yarns with a similar weight, fiber content, and texture.
You will need:
- sport weight / fine cotton yarn in green, dark green, and white
- 2.5 mm crochet hook, or a hook suitable for your yarn
- fiberfill stuffing
- yarn needle
- scissors
- stitch marker
- optional: cardboard for the bottom of the tree
- optional: beads or other small decorations
Gauge and Size Notes
Gauge is not critical for this pattern. The most important thing is to keep your stitches tight enough so the stuffing does not show through and the tree holds its shape.
With Schachenmayr Catania and a 2.5 mm hook, the finished crochet Christmas tree measures approximately 12 cm / 4.7 in high. You can make a larger or smaller tree by changing your yarn weight, hook size, or both.

- You can alternate green, dark green, and white yarn for the branches.
- The bottom is made separately from two round pieces.
- A cardboard circle can be placed inside the bottom to help the tree stand more confidently.

R38: sc in all sts (60, see Photo 1).

Remove the stitch marker, make 1 sl st, cut the yarn leaving a tail of about 15 cm / 5 in, and finish the round with an invisible needle join.
To do this, pull the yarn end through the last stitch and thread it onto a needle. Skip one stitch and insert the needle into both loops of the next stitch, as shown in Photo 2. Then go back into the back loop only of the same stitch where the yarn comes from (see Photo 3).

Tighten it just enough so the join looks like a regular stitch (see Photo 4). Weave in the end.

Branches
Alternate green, dark green, and white yarn colors for the branches.
Branch Round 1: Return to the remaining front loops of R36. Insert your hook into the front loop of the first stitch (see Photo 5) and work the following repeat: * ch 2 (see Photo 6),

2 dc, ch 2 (see Photo 7), 1 sl st into the first ch of the ch-2 to make a picot, 2 dc (see Photo 8),

1 sl st (see Photo 9), then sl st into the next 2 front loops. Repeat from * to the end of the round (see Photo 11).

Crochet branches in the same way in all remaining front loops. The branch layers are ready (see Photos 12 and 13).

Bottom
Make a magic ring. Work in continuous rounds with a stitch marker.
R1: 6 sc into magic ring (6)
R2: [inc] x 6 (12)
R3: [sc, inc] x 6 (18)
R4: sc, inc, [2 sc, inc] x 5, sc (24)
R5: [3 sc, inc] x 6 (30)
R6: 2 sc, inc, [4 sc, inc] x 5, 2 sc (36)
R7: [5 sc, inc] x 6 (42)
R8: 3 sc, inc, [6 sc, inc] x 5, 3 sc (48)
R9: [7 sc, inc] x 6 (54)
R10: 4 sc, inc, [8 sc, inc] x 5, 4 sc (60), remove the stitch marker, make 1 sl st, cut the yarn leaving a tail of about 15 cm / 5 in, and finish the round with an invisible needle join as described above.
Crochet the second bottom piece the same way, but do not cut the yarn (see Photo 14).

If you want the tree to stand more confidently, place the finished bottom piece onto cardboard and trace around it. Cut out the cardboard circle (see Photo 15).

Joining the Bottom Pieces
Join the two bottom pieces with a slip stitch seam. Hold the two crochet pieces with the wrong sides facing each other.
* Insert your hook from front to back through the next stitch on the piece closest to you. Continue inserting the hook through the matching stitch on the second piece (see Photo 16). Yarn over and pull the yarn through these stitches (see Photo 17) and through the loop on your hook in one movement.

That is your first slip stitch (see Photo 18). Repeat from * to the end of the seam. Place the cut cardboard circle inside before finishing, if using one (see Photo 19).

Remove the stitch marker, cut the yarn leaving a tail of about 15 cm / 5 in, and finish the round with an invisible needle join as described above.

Final Assembly
Stuff the Christmas tree with fiberfill.

Join the tree and the bottom as shown in Photos 23 and 24. Add all the needed stuffing before closing completely.

You can decorate your Christmas tree with beads or other small embellishments.
